You will have to do some advanced planning. Just get on the bus going to the city you want to go to, and the assistant on the bus will collect your money just before you exit the bus. (The Rapidpass is also good for travel on the subway in Panama City, and the buses within Panama City.) Once you are out of Panama City, in the interior, you won't need to buy tickets. This will allow you to go through the turnstiles, to access your bus. In addition to your ticket, you will have to go to the kiosk which sells Rapidpasses, and buy a Rapidpass. The only place you should need tickets is in Panama City, at the main bus station by Albrook Mall. The only scenic part of the trip is when you cross over the continental divide, in the latter part of your journey. For example, take a bus to Santiago and from there to either Santa Fé in the mountains or Santa Catalina on the Pacific, where you can visit Isla Coiba for great snorkeling. If you want to see Panama, then you might consider breaking up the trip over a few days. If you just want to get to Bocas del Toro, those are your options. Also, the people around you tend to play music and movies at full volume, so bring earplugs if you want to sleep. It's best to bring a jacket or sweater and a blanket. The busses are comfortable except for the air conditioning. There are express busses that leave in the evening and arrive in Almirante around dawn. And, you're also right, it takes 10 hours. The easiest and fastest way is take a flight on Air Panama from Albrook airport to Bocas del Toro.
